ITF (FC0-U61) Skills Lab: Installing Windows
Exercise 1: Manual Installation of Windows 10
Objective: This exercise demonstrates the process of manually installing Windows 10 on a virtual machine, focusing on proper setup and configuration in a virtualized environment.
Task 1: Creating a Virtual Machine in Server 2019
Connect to Server 2019
- Start by connecting to the Server 2019 virtual machine.
Use Hyper-V to Create a Virtual Machine
- Once connected, open the Hyper-V service.
- Create a new, empty virtual machine for the Windows 10 installation.
Troubleshooting Scenario:
- If Hyper-V is not available, verify that virtualization is enabled in the system BIOS.
Reflection:
- Document the steps taken to create the virtual machine and any initial challenges encountered.
Task 2: Setting Up a New Virtual Machine in Hyper-V
Log in to Server 2019 VM
- After logging in to the Server 2019 virtual machine, open the Hyper-V service.
Locate and Create a New Virtual Machine
- In Hyper-V, find your current machine, right-click on it, and select New > Virtual Machine to launch the wizard.
Review the Wizard Information
- Carefully read the information provided in the New Virtual Machine Wizard before proceeding.
Reflection:
- Ensure that all preliminary settings are correct before moving forward.
Task 3: Configuring the New Virtual Machine
Begin the Creation Process
- Proceed with creating the new virtual machine.
Specify Name and Location
- Enter a name for the virtual machine and define its storage location.
Select the Generation
- Choose between Generation 1 or Generation 2:
- Generation 1: Provides legacy hardware compatibility, including support for 32-bit operating systems.
- Generation 2: Offers modern, faster, and more secure UEFI-based features for 64-bit operating systems.
Optional Challenge:
- Experiment with creating both generations and note the differences in performance and features.
- Choose between Generation 1 or Generation 2:
Reflection:
- Document the generation selected and the reasoning behind your choice.
Task 4: Configuring Memory, Network, and Storage for the Virtual Machine
Assign Memory
- Specify the amount of memory needed for the virtual machine.
Configure Network
- Set up the network configuration. Choose to connect via a New Virtual Switch or remain disconnected.
- For this exercise, select the New Virtual Switch option.
Create Virtual Hard Disk
- Create a new virtual hard disk and use the default settings provided.
Specify Installation Options
- Select Install an Operating System from Media. Choose Image File, then browse and locate the Windows 10 image file.
Troubleshooting Scenario:
- If the virtual hard disk fails to create, ensure there is sufficient storage space on the host machine.
Reflection:
- Note the memory and storage configurations and verify network connectivity.
Task 5: Finalizing and Creating the Virtual Machine
Review Configuration Summary
- Carefully review the summary to ensure all settings are correct.
Create the Virtual Machine
- Finalize the setup by selecting Finish.
Locate the New Virtual Machine
- Find the newly created virtual machine listed in the Virtual Machines section of the Hyper-V dashboard.
Reflection:
- Document the successful creation of the virtual machine and any lessons learned during the process.
Task 6: Connecting to the New Virtual Machine and Installing Windows 10
Connect to the New Virtual Machine
- Connect to the newly created virtual machine, named PLABWIN102.
Prepare for Windows 10 Installation
- With the connection established, begin the Windows 10 OS installation from the image file.
Reflection:
- Note any initial setup observations or issues during the connection process.
Task 7: Installing Windows 10 Pro on the Virtual Machine
Select Windows 10 Version
- Choose Windows 10 Pro during the setup prompts.
Agree to Licensing Terms
- Review and agree to the licensing terms to proceed.
Choose Installation Type
- Select Custom Installation for a clean setup.
Specify Installation Location
- Choose Drive 0 (the virtual hard disk created earlier) as the installation destination.
Troubleshooting Scenario:
- If the installation fails, verify that the image file is not corrupted and that sufficient storage is allocated.
Reflection:
- Document the progress and confirm that the correct version was installed.
Task 8: Finalizing the Windows 10 Installation
Complete Windows Setup
- Allow the installation process to complete, and follow the prompts to finalize setup.
Post-Installation Configuration
- Set up region, keyboard layout, and network connectivity.
- Create a user account and configure privacy settings.
Reflection:
- Note the post-installation settings and any preferences configured.
Task 9: Completing the Virtual Machine Setup
Review Completion
- Verify that the Windows 10 Pro virtual machine is functional.
Best Practices for Shutdown
- Shut down the virtual machine properly before concluding the exercise.
Reflection:
- Reflect on the overall process and identify areas for improvement or further learning.
