Exercise 1: Install Windows Updates
Task 1: Manually Installing a Windows Update
Power On and Connect to Virtual Machines
- Start by powering on the virtual machines and connecting to the Windows 10 virtual machine.
Log In
- Use the provided credentials to log in to the Windows 10 VM.
Navigate to the Tools Folder
- Open File Explorer and go to This PC.
- Open the Local Disk (C:), then locate and open the tools folder.
Locate the Update File
- In the tools folder, find the WindowsTH-RSAT_WS_1709-x64 file and open it.
Start the Installation
- A Windows Update Standalone Installer message box will appear, asking if you want to install the update.
- Select Yes to proceed.
Agree to Terms and Start Installation
- Review the terms and select I agree to begin the installation.
Complete the Installation
- Once the installation is complete, close all dialog boxes.
Task 2: Verifying Windows Administrator Tools
Open Windows Administrative Tools
- Click the Start button and navigate to the Windows Administrative Tools folder.
Launch Active Directory Users and Computers
- From the dropdown menu, select Active Directory Users and Computers.
Verify Functionality
- Ensure the tool opens correctly, confirming that the Windows Administrative Tools are functioning properly.
Task 3: Manually Checking for Windows Updates
Open Settings
- Click the Start button and select the gear icon (or Settings).
Access Updates & Security
- In the Settings dashboard, click on Updates & Security.
Check for Updates
- In the Windows Update window, select Check for Updates.
- While the system checks for updates, scroll down and click View Update History.
Review Update History
- In the View Update History section, you can see a list of previous updates under Quality Updates.
- Confirm the manually installed update appears as Update for Windows (KB2693643).
Task 4: Configuring Active Hours and Advanced Update Settings
Set Active Hours
- Scroll down and select Change active hours.
- Click Change, set the range to 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, and save your settings.
Enable Advanced Update Options
- Return to the Windows Update page and select Advanced options.
- On the Advanced options page, turn on Receive updates for other Microsoft products when you update Windows.
Confirm Update Status
- Go back to the Windows Update page to ensure all updates are downloading and installing.
Task 5: Uninstalling a Previous Update
Navigate to Update History
- Go to the Windows Update page, scroll down, and select View Update History.
Access Installed Updates
- On the View Update History page, select Uninstall Updates.
- An Installed Updates dialog box will appear.
Select the Update to Uninstall
- Find the update labeled Update for Microsoft Windows (KB2693643), select it, and click the Uninstall tab.
Confirm Uninstallation
- A dialog box will ask if you’re sure you want to uninstall the update; select Yes.
- Wait for the update to uninstall.
Restart Prompt
- Once the uninstall is complete, you’ll be prompted to Restart Now or Restart Later. Close this dialog box.
Power Off Virtual Machines
- Close all open windows and dialog boxes, then shut down and power off all virtual machines.
