Exercise 1: Create a System Image Backup


Task 1: Add an Additional Virtual Hard Disk

  1. Connect to the Windows Server 2019 Virtual Machine

    • Log in with the provided credentials. (This VM is a domain member.)
  2. Open Hyper-V Manager

    • In Server Manager, go to Tools > Hyper-V Manager.
  3. Configure the Virtual Hard Disk

    • Locate PLABWIN101 in the details pane.
    • Right-click and select Settings.
    • Scroll down to SCSI Controller and select Hard Drive.
    • Click Add to open the Hard Drive details pane.
  4. Set Up the Virtual Hard Disk

    • Configure as follows:
      • Choose a disk size: Dynamically Expanding
      • Specify Name and Location (as provided in the task instructions)
      • Configure Disk: Create a new blank virtual hard disk
    • Click Finish, then OK in the SCSI Controller window.

Task 2: Initialize and Create a New Simple Volume

  1. Connect to the Virtual Machine in Hyper-V Manager

    • In Hyper-V Manager, locate PLABWIN101.
    • Right-click and select Connect.
    • Click Start to power on the VM.
  2. Log in and Open Disk Management

    • Log in as Admin with the provided credentials.
    • Right-click the Start Menu and select Disk Management.
  3. Initialize the New Disk

    • In the Initialize Disk dialog box, click OK.
    • Right-click Disk 1 - Unallocated and select New Simple Volume.
  4. Complete the New Simple Volume Wizard

    • Click Next > Use Default Volume Size > Next
    • Use Default Drive Letter > Next
    • Ensure Perform a Quick Format is checked > Next
    • Click Finish to complete.
    • Close the Disk Management tool.

Task 3: Create a System Image Backup

  1. Open Backup Settings

    • Click Start Menu > Settings.
    • In the search bar, type backup and select Backup Settings.
  2. Access Backup and Restore (Windows 7)

    • Scroll to Looking for an older backup?
    • Click Go to Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
  3. Create a System Image

    • Click Create a system image in the left pane.
    • Select the newly formatted E:\ Drive as the backup destination.
    • Click Next > Start Backup (This process may take a few minutes).
  4. Skip System Repair Disc Creation

    • When prompted, select No for the system repair disc.
    • Close all open windows.

Task 4: Change the Virtual Machine Startup Settings

  1. Adjust Resolution for Better Navigation

    • Change the resolution if needed.
  2. Modify Boot Order in VM Settings

    • Open Settings and select Firmware under Hardware.
    • Move DVD Drive to the top of the Boot Order.
    • Click OK to save changes.
  3. Restart the Virtual Machine

    • Reset the resolution for ease of navigation.
    • Restart the VM.

Task 5: Perform System Image Restore

  1. Boot from CD/DVD

    • When prompted, Press any key to boot from CD or DVD.
  2. Open Windows Recovery

    • In Windows Setup, click Next.
    • Click Repair your computer.
  3. Start System Image Recovery

    • In Advanced Options, select Troubleshoot > System Image Recovery.
    • Choose Windows 10.
  4. Select the System Image Backup

    • Verify the Location, Date & Time, and Computer Name.
    • Click Next.
  5. Complete the Restore Process

    • Use default settings and click Next.
    • Click Finish > Yes to confirm overwriting the drive.
    • Wait for the Reimaging Process to complete.
    • Click Restart Now.
  6. Verify Restoration

    • After rebooting, log in using the provided credentials.
    • Right-click Start Menu > System to check Device Specifications.
    • Shut down the VM and close PLABWIN101 guest window.
    • Close Hyper-V Manager.

Exercise 2: Schedule a Server Backup


Task 1: Install Windows Server Backup

  1. Connect to the Domain Controller

    • Log in as Admin.
  2. Install Windows Server Backup via PowerShell

    • Open Server Manager > Tools > Windows PowerShell.
    • Run the command:
      Install-WindowsFeature Windows-Server-Backup -IncludeManagementTools
    • Wait for installation to complete.

Task 2: Allow File and Printer Sharing

  1. Open Windows Firewall Settings

    • Search Windows Firewall in the Start Menu.
    • Select Allow an app through Windows Firewall.
  2. Enable File and Printer Sharing

    • Scroll to File and Printer Sharing and check all options (Domain, Private, Public).
    • Click OK.

Task 3: Schedule a Backup

  1. Open Windows Server Backup

    • In Server Manager, go to Tools > Windows Server Backup.
  2. Configure Backup Schedule

    • Select Local Backup from the left panel.
    • Right-click Local Backup and select Backup Schedule.
  3. Complete Windows Server Backup Wizard

    • Getting Started: Click Next.
    • Backup Configuration: Select Custom > Next.
    • Select Items for Backup:
      • Click Add Items > System State > OK.
    • Specify Backup Time:
      • Select Once a day, set time to 12:00 AM, then click Next.
    • Specify Destination Type:
      • Select Back up to a shared network folder.
  4. Confirm Backup Location

    • A message box will warn that the new backup will erase the previous one. Click OK.
    • Enter the remote share folder path:
      \\locationProvided\c$\
    • Enter User Credentials when prompted.
    • Click OK > Next.
  5. Complete the Backup Setup

    • Review the Confirmation Page, then click Finish.
    • Wait for the schedule to be created.
    • A status message will confirm:
      "You have successfully created the backup schedule."
  6. Close All Windows

    • Exit the Windows Server Backup Wizard, console windows, and all open applications.

Completion

You have successfully completed the Backup and Restore virtual lab, including system image backup, restore, and scheduled backups.
